Posthumous Degrees

It shall be the policy of The University of Alabama System Board of Trustees, upon recommendations of The University of Alabama President, to award posthumous degrees for students who have successfully completed a substantial portion of their academic programs with diplomas to specifically indicate a posthumous degree, the language of which would cite the circumstances warranting such award. Such diplomas may be presented at appropriate private ceremonies at the discretion of The University of Alabama President with the appropriate commencement program noting that the degree is posthumous.

In practice, the Academic Dean of the student in question shall send a letter to the Provost requesting that the degree be awarded posthumously. Once it has been approved, the Office of the Provost notifies of the Office of the University Registrar [ARUR]. Normally, ARUR will notify the parents that the degree has been approved and that they have the choice of having it presented at commencement or at a private ceremony.
